Fully legal and available everywhere from your local supermarket to the junk food chain restaurant.
I really think that bad food, tobacco and alcohol are the worst, cause you can get them anywhere, and abuse of their use will knock you down eventually.
But seriously, the worst is Cocaine. Origin: Latin America, main import point to the US: Miami.
Addiction from the first go, and you could die on the first go.
The molecules of the stuff are a synthetic copy of the molecules of endorphine, the hormone that causes us to feel happiness when transmitted across the nerve synapses/space between the nerves.
Cocaine replaces this molecule, and rests within the synapse, making the taker feel a surge of joy.
It also permanently shuts down your endorphine secretion ability: basically, if all your emotions were on a switchboard, cocaine would cause the switch called “happiness” to short circuit, disconnecting it from your nervous system.
I do not know if therapy helps.
The dirtiest part of cocaine is the way it is raised in really poor countries, where workers slave away for peanuts, and a lot of people get hurt or killed for its trade.
Coca leaves are chewed by natives, giving a nulling effect to the inside of the mouth, balanced by sucking on a sliver of limestone, an alkali to balance the acid. This is harmless. Coca-Cola originally used Coca extract till Cocaine was illegalised in the States in 1907. Cocaine is an extract of the Coca leaf, by two German scientists in the late 1800’s.
Next is heroin, though I do not know how bad its effects are. It is made of a part of the opium poppy flower, while the seeds, if roasted, are harmless, and quite delicious in baked goods.
Opium has been smoked for a loooong time before heroin was extracted and came onto the market. One of the prime sources for heroin is Afghanistan.
The English used opium to supress the Chinese in the 1800s. Get the public hooked on the stuff, kill their minds.
