I Want to Work in Drug Enforcement/Counseling. Where Do I Start? Grad School, Military, Reserve, Coast Guard?

Question by : I want to work in Drug Enforcement/Counseling. Where do I start? Grad School, Military, Reserve, Coast Guard?
My name is Jeremiah… I am a twenty-five year old husband and father (professionally I am a Grocery store shift manager). I have a degree in Broadcast Communications… but once I got working in the field as a P/A I found that I really didn’t have a zest for the work (I originally wanted to be a investigative reporter). My brother is a Police officer… he loves his job. I like my job (and the people I work with), it pays well but have recently found myself coming to the realization that I have NO PASSION FOR WHAT I DO… it allows me to support my family, but leaves me zero satisfaction other than that. I am very bright… graduated Summa Cumme Laude… 3.96… got one B out of 40 something classes. My instructors always told me that I should’ve been a Biosci or engineering major (brain heavy). I’m veering of topic… basically I’ve spent the last two years trying to find out what I’m passionate about. TODAY… IT STRUCK ME!!!

I HATE DRUGS/ADDICTION… I have watched several family members succumb to them. Siblings in and out of jail… ruining their marriages and leaving children in the wake. Since I was a teen I watched parents paying to try and get them clean. I have so many times fought with my addict siblings because I tried to help but didn’t know how. Even my wife was a “pothead” when I met her… I told her that I couldn’t be with her because I hated being around “the scene” because it just doesn’t take your life anywhere good. She quit… and never regrets it and I love her for it. You name a drug; alcohol, pain killers, cocaine, marijauna, meth… and I’ve seen a someone battle it wishing for a better way.

I want to help the drug problem somehow.. I want to help people get clean… I want to find the people how are selling the drugs to kids and stop them before they start using. Drug enforcement… addiction counseling… I’ve been told the way to your greatest success is to follow your passion. There is no greater passion I have than my belief that NO DRUG IS A GOOD THING… even weed… unprescribed pain killers… all these things do is limit peoples potential and take them further away from themselves. Then it takes money from the pockets of people with families to support and honest lives to live, into the pockets of criminals feeding on peoples addictions/pains.

Where do I start to get into this field… go back to school and get A.A. in criminal justice… or should I join the Local Air Force reserve and have that pay for a Master’s Degree administration of justice… or psychology. My brother suggested I join the Army as a Commisioned Officer with my degree… but will that do more toward getting me into the battle where my heart lies. Should I volunteer at a Police Station… go to police academy. Someone suggested joining the Coast Gaurd as they have many large scale Drug Enforcement operations in different parts of the country (Miami, San Diego, New York), and with my degree, fitness and motivation I would probably stand a decent chance at getting into the field in that vein.

I also have a family to support mind you… but this is something that in my heart I have to do.

I thank you for reading… any advice helps… good luck at finding your way in life… God Bless,
Jeremiah
